HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENTS

PAEROA-WAI H I ROUTE POSTPONEMENT OF CLOSING [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PAEROA, Wednesday Although complete arrangements have been made to commence work on tho Paeroa-Waihi main highway, it has now been decided to allow tho Karangahake Gorge Road to remain open until next Monday morning. Tho road was to havo been closed to-day, but owing to the wet weather during tho past week and tho expected heavy traffic to tho Thames races on Thursday and Saturday, it was considered advisable to postpone closing the main road for a few da vs.

An inspection of the deviation over thu old Hahu Hood was made to-day by the county chairman, Mr. W. Marshall, accompanied by engineers. Mr. Marshall reports that considerable work has been carried out on tho road during the past month. Frequent passing places are marked by white Hags, two bridges have been built, and the safety of tho road has been greatly improved. He considers that tho improvements have made the deviation perfectly safe, provided motorists exerciso reasonable euro and do not travel at high speeds.
