MODERN MOTOR-SHIP
THE DORSET IN PORT FIRST VISIT TO AUCKLAND One of the finest vessels of her typo to visit Auckland, the Federal Line motor-ship Dorset arrived from Liverpool on Tuesday night and berthed at Queen's Wharf yesterday. Heavily laden, the ship's graceful lines were seen to advantage. With a nice sweeping sheer, well-ilared bows, a squat, oval funnel and well-proportioned superstructure, the Dorset is characteristic of the fast and spacious ships designed specially for the rapid carriage of primary produce from Australia and the Dominion to Great Britain.
Although her third voyage, this is the Dorset's first visit to New Zealand. Iler two previous passages were to Australia. The Dorset is sister ship to the Durham, which was at Auckland last May. .Diiriiijj; trials tlio Durham registered 18.4 knots and later proved herself when she made the passago from Brisbane to Newcastle, a distance of over 500 miles, at an average speed of ]8.2 knots. These ships are fitted with the very latest equipment for the carriage of refrigerated cargoes.
First-class accommodation is provided for the engineers and officers, amidships. Cooking is all clone by electricity and hot and cold water is supplied to all cabins and bathrooms. The Dorset, unlike the Durham, does not carry cadets. The Dorset is under the command of Captain F. Ashworth. She made tho passage from Liverpool via tho Cape of Good Hope, and no difficulty was experienced in keeping to her schedule.
