FLIGHTS TO AUSTRALIA
KINGSFORD SMITH STARTS DEPARTURE FROM LYMPNE (Received November 6, 8.45 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 6 Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his co-pilot, Mr. Thomas Pethybridge, left Lympne at 6.27 a.m. to-day on their second attempt to fly to Australia in the Lady Southern Cross. Sir Charles' permissible load of petrol from England was 138 gallons. Thi6 will enable him to fly about 1100 miles at a cruising speed of 190 miles an holir, but when in Europe he may take on additional petrol. If the early stages of the flight are satisfactory he intends to try for the record. His ambition is to reach Melbourne at noon on Saturday (Australian time), which would beat Mr. C. W. A. Scott's record.'
Sir Charles and Mr. Pe thy bridge left Croydon on October 23 on their first attempt to fly to Australia. However, " as the result of had weather they turned back and landed at Croydon again next evening. The leading and trailing edges of the wings of the aeroplane were badly torn and the woodwork was affeCted as the result of hail, snow and ioe formation. The airmen have been awaiting the completion of repairs. AIRMEN IN INDIA MELROSE AND BROADKENT. DEPARTURE FROM KARACHI (Received November 6, 11.45 p.m.) KARACHI. Nov. ' t The young Australian airman Mr. C. J. Melrose, who is flying solo from England to Australia, arrived at Karachi yesterday and left for Jodhpur at 8 a.m. to-day. Mr. H. •F. Broadbent arrived at Karachi last night and resumed his flight to Australia at 9.10 a.m. to-day< His next stop will be at Allahabad.
