ENTRY TO ACCOUNTANCY

SCHOOL CERTIFICATE

NOT ACCEPTABLE AS PASS ATTITUDE OF THE SOCIETY [IJV TELKGIIAPJl —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Mqndny The Council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants has adopted the report of the sub-committee which considered the reouest o.i' representatives of secondary schools that a school certificate should bo recognised as an examination pass for the society's preliminary - examination.

The report state:; that the sub-com-mittee is of the opinion that the standard for the school certificate is at least equal to that of matriculation, but cannot recommend the adoption of the certificate as entitling the candidate to a pass in the society's preliminary examination because of the following reasons:—(a) A school certificate is not accepted by the university' in lieu of matriculation and is therefore of no value to a candidate who wishes to proceed to the Bachelor of Commerce degree; (b) A school certificate is not recognised by other professions, such as medicine, law or dentistry; (c) To accept a certificate when it has no outside recognition would tend to lower, in the estimation of outside persons, the value of the society's examination.

The sub-committee recommends that representations should be made to the university to accept again partial passes in the matriculation examination.
