NOTES ON THE RUNNING VIOLENTA'S RUNAWAY WIN THE FAILURE OF WINO [by TELECRAPH —OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Trishna, a short-priced favourite for the First Hurdles, mado a hold attempt to win, but after screwing badly at tho last fence was unable to head off Joppa, and a dead-neat wasf declared. Joppa and Radiant Rose piloted Trishna, Fleeting Glance and Woatherly into the straight. Radiant Rose was done with after jumping the concluding, obstacle and Trishna tackled Joppa. In a hard finish Trishna got up in the last stride to draw level. Chrysology and Weatherly were pulled up. Violenta, another staunch favourite, had a runaway victory in the Ohapi Hack Handicap. She quickly ran to the front and led round the top from Hine Ra, Miracle, Greek Vase, Jack Ahoy and Disguise. Hine Ra stumbled badly after passing the home turn and interfered with Greek Vase. Miracle followed Violenta into the straight, but although ho got up to within a length of her, she was being eased up before the post was reached. Wino again set a fast pace in the Geraldino Cup and led from the early stages until well into the straight, where he compounded. Gay Crest was Wino's nearest attendant for a mile, but she retired and Wino was followed into the straight by Quite Soon, Epris, Dodge and Haere Tonu. Quito Soon was well clear of Hodge after passing tho distance, but the latter gradually crept up on her and in a sustained finish he bent her in the last few strides.

Casanova, tho favourite for the Geraldine Trot, lost his chance by failing to go off correctly and making a mistake again in tho first two furlongs. Waikitea actod as pacemaker from the outset and was clear of Master Garry and Royal Crescent, Repeal and Dual. Royal Crescent drew to the front commencing the run home and went on to win easily from Dual, who finished on better than Repeal. Kinnoull was responsible for a sterling effort in winning the Squatters' Handicap. Tho speedy Bon Tray opened up a big gap rounding the home turn and was well clear of Tizzy, Kinnoull and Cranford. Entering the straight, Kinnoull drew out from iho.-:e to tacklo Bon Tray, and although his task at one stage looked almost hopeless, ho gradually wore down the leader and was going away from him crossing tho line

Tho contest for the Kaukapnka Handicap was spoilt by a ragged start, many being hopelessly left, while Rose Vnl and Dollar Prince lost valuable ground. Riptide, Hose of Tralce and Kurapao were the most prominent early and they carried on from Gold Cross and Golden Dent. Riptide was first into tho straight, but inside tho distance Golden Dart had charge and, throwing off a challenge by Gold Cross, won well. Rose Val came from the back to get third money from Riptide. Investors showed good judgment in sending Civic out ' favourite for the Orari Trot, as he trailed Star Vale from tho early stages, and once in the straight he drew out to win easily. Colleen Wrack was pocketed for some distance in tho run homo, hut got out nearing the post to gain second money from Satin Lass, who finished very fast. Trivet, tho first choice for tho Belfield Handicap, got away badly and was nover in tho firing line. Courtyard was in charge entering the straight from Metal Bird. McHeath and Quietly. Quietly followed Courtyard insido the distance and streaked away lor a decisive win. In a close tussle for second honours McHeath beat Courtyard by a head. Metal Bird was next.
