SYDNEY TURF NEWS

YOUNG lIDEA'S FORM RECENT WIN CRITICISED SURPRISE BY FORESTRY [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY. Sept. 20 Although Young Idea won tho Sir Herbert Maitland Stakes at Victoria Park on Wednesday, there were numerous experienced men who were anything but impressed. Old hands like 11. Wootton and W. Booth declared against him as a Derby coht. Young Idea ran the seven furlongs in 1.25 and defeated Silver Ring and Rogilla, but if Rogilla had left the barrier correctly there is little doubt that ho would have won. On the contrary, Young Idea had tho run of tho race. He moved up on the inside of first Akuna, then Whittingham, and finally Silver Ring in tho straight. Ho headed off Silver Ring a furlong from home, and, although ho had slowed up, ho was being pushed along right on tho post to ward off Silver Ring <and Rogilla. He was disappointing in that ho was inclined to get up in tho air toward the finish. Silver Ring ran his best race for a long time. He was caught rather easily by Young Idea a furlong from home, but was going on again at tho finish. It was surprising to see Pike, on Silver Ring, lot Young Idea up on the inside. It was as well that a New Zealand jockey was not on Silver Ring. Rogilla's Typical Finish

Rogilla, as usual, was restive at the barrier and was twisting round as tho machine was released. He must have given away easily 12 lengths and then was beaten into third place by a length and a bead. His'finish was reminiscent of tbo Rogilla of old. Grand Mogul, tho other three-year-old in tho field besides Young Idea, rather surprised by putting some determination into his close fourth.

Havaspot had a run in the hurdle race at Victoria Park, but jumped erratically. The experience should do him some good and he looks very well. The Epsom Handicap candidato Turbine won the first division of the Flying Handicap at Victoria Park. Ho did not have very strong opposition, for his nearest challengers, Orient Orb and Irish Moon, went off tho course at tho turn, This left King Musk to come through for third prize. This was King Musk s first effort in Sydney and it suggested ihnt he will bo' useful in middle-distance events in not too select company. His stable mate Persian ran a fair race to finish sixth. This was his first outing since his resumption of work. King of Diamonds Fails King of Diamonds was a very false favourite in a weak third division field at Victoria Park. Although he carried no stably money, he was rushed by investors, and, after running ungenerously, finished fourth. He is one of those disheartening horses who do good work on the training track, but fail to live up to it in a race. Backers will give him a wide berth in future. Forestry's two failures recently caused his total neglect in the Victoria Park Handicap, hut they did not prevent him from winning and putting up a good performance with 9.2. Tho big J.imond gelding was soon in front, and, when joined by the lightweight Mystic Spell four furlongs from home, he battled on. Half-way down the straight Mystic Spell looked like prevailing, but, in* spite of the disadvantage of 241b., Forestry bulldogged his way to victory. The performance was an unusual one for a raco of practically 11 furlongs, and behind Forestry were Royal Star, Limvris and lolaus, all fair gallopers.

A. B. WILLIAMS* HORSES [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT! HASTINGS, Thursday The second annual horse parade held under the auspices of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club was staged on tho Hastings racecourse to-day. The gat-es were thrown open to tho public, while the committee invited all to partake of afternoon tea and refreshments. The object of the parade was to assist trainers in tho preparation of untried horses, there being an official starter and all jockeys being compelled to wear correct riding apparel. Tho parade, to all intents and purposes, was as instructive as a race meetingThe most interesting of tho seven races was the juvenile sprint, four furlongs. In this event, after several years' absence from the racecourse, the livery of ono of New Zealand's leading owners, Mr. A. B. Williams, was unfurled. For him the trainer, J. H. Jefferd, brought in three youngsters, Kindheart (Philamor Clemency), Nurse Nightingale (Night Raid—Sympathetic), and Western Maid (IliadMaid of the West). All three possess galloping ability, if not quite so forward as most. The Philamor colt meets all requirements as one most likely to develop into a fine thoroughbred, and it will occasion great surprise if lie does not annex some of tho most important juvenile classics. Of the untried throe-ycar-okls there were several who caught tho eye as tho makings of typical racehorses. These included John Peel (Hunting Song—Merry Roo), Master Cyklon (Hunting Song—Cytole), Mutunga (Cockpit-—Gold Bound), Peter Bcckford (Hunting Song—Sarty), and two unnamed fillies by Tidal—Silver Strand and Hunting Song—Cynetto respectively. , Results: — , Two-year-old Race. nbout 4 fur.- Silver River (Hoyden—Stnrmist), 1; filly by Nikcor Minstrel —Tea Tnttlc, 2; Mohua (Huntinß Sons —Moa Bird), 3.
