UNSTAMPED RECEIPT
RENT COLLECTOR FINED CHARGES OF DIVIDING MONEYS [BY TELEGKAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday No precedent in New Zealand law could be found on a point raised in the Magistrate's Court this morning. William George McNeill was charged with writing a receipt liable for stamp duty without affixing a stamp, and with twelve charges of dividing moneys over £2, so as to avoid paying stamp duty. Evidence was given that McNeill collected rent totalling £2 5s fortnightly, and entered it as two weekly payments of 22s 6d. Counsel for McNeill said that he was not able to find a precedent for the case.
Mr. Levvey, S.M., offered to make the penalty £6, so that' a test case could be stated, but after further legal argument a penalty of 20s on the first charge was entered, the defendant being convicted and discharged on the others.
