GREATER AUCKLAND
POSITION OF OUTER SUBURBS DISCUSSION AT PAPATOETOE The question whether the Papatoetoe town district would benefit by merging in a greater Auckland scheme was discussed last night by the Town Board. Mr. W A. Cairns asked whether tl»> board had considered making any mov<> to support the Greater Auckland movement. He said the proposal appeared to hold out advantages to Papatoetoe. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson, said the interests of the city and tho district could not be said to be identical. "The natural boundary of the metropolitan area would appear to be the Tamaki River," he added. He quof»tioned whether it would be advisable for the town board to show any interest in the scheme. Mr. Cairns said the district would benefit from drainage and other schemes. Mr. L. J. Kendall said electricpower and other boards covered wider districts than the area proposed in the Greater Auckland scheme. "Papatoetoe was established in 1914 and the city in 1840. As a young separate district we should profit by tho mistakes natural to the early settlement," said the chairman. He said if Papatoetoe merged wiih tho city it would end in the district's interests being submerged. Tho discussion then lapsed.
