UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
CENTRALISATION SCHEME POSITION IN CANADA NEW YORK, Sept. 8 In an interview with a representative of the Australian Associated Press today Sir Frederick Stewart, formerly Australian Minister of Commerce, said that during his hurried visit to Canada he had held conversations with the Prime Minister, Mr. It. B. Bennett, and various Ministers and municipal authorities concerning special and industrial problems. He found the authorities anxious for a greater centralisation of unemployment relief, to which end they had recently passed the Unemployment Insurance Act., This was largely founded on the British Act. "As in Australia the authority over industrial issues previously was regarded as the prerogative of the Stato Governments, but the Canadian Legislature claimed authority from the section of the Versailles Treaty which called upon tho signatories to take appropriate steps to keep industrial peace," said Sir Frederick.
