NEW TRAFFIC ROUTE
QUEEN STREET EXTENSION REMOVAL OF COTTAGES A tender for the removal of eight cottages on the property between the end of Upper Queen Street and Newton Road has been let by the Works Committee of the City Council to Mr. P. Sawyer, who will pay the council. £284 for the right to demolish the bouses, the material becoming the property of the contractor.
The removal of these cottages is part of the scheme for the extension of Upper Queen Street to Newton Road and when the street is continued through this area it will give s.n improved traffic; outlet by way of Exmouth Street to the New North Road. For the purpose of the scheme the council acquired one cottage in Newton Road, two in Gloucester Street, two in Randolph Street and three in Karaka Street. Work has been proceeding for some time in Exmouth Street where the erection of massive stone retaining walls has made possible the widening of the carriageway and an improvement of grades. When completed this new traffic outlet should be the means of diverting much of the traffic which now usea Upper Symonds Street.
