LANDMARK AT THAMES
OLD TREE CUT DOWN [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent) THAMES. Monday A very old landmark of Thames, a eucalyptus tree, was cut down this morning. It was growing adjacent to the tennis courts in tho High School grounds, and as it was frequently shedding heavy limbs, the board decided that it was a danger. The tree was well over GO years old, having been planted in the grounds of the old Globe Hotel, which stood at the corner of Rolleston and Sealey Streets and which has long been demolished. The land afterward became the grounds of tho Katiacranga Boys' School, and the tree was then a good height. The tree measured 96ft. in height and at the base it was 4ft. 9in. in diameter. It is supposed to have been planted by Mr. Delahunty, who was the proprietor of the hotel.
