NEW LYNN CROSSING

WARNING DEVICE PROMISED SIGNAL AT PORTAGE ROAD Advice that an automatic warning signal of modern type is to be set up <it the Portage Road level-crossing. New Lynn, was received yesterday by the Mayor of New Lynn, Mr. G. Lawson, in a letter from the general manager of the New Zealand Railways, Mr. G. H. Mackley. This is the result of considerable agitation by the Borough Council and residents. About 1000 residents of New Lynn signed a petition asking for some warning device following a fatal accident at the crossing some months ago. Jhe petition was supported by the New Lynn and Titirangi Women's Institutes. At the invitation of the Mayor Mr. Mackley later inspected the crossing and promised to give a decision as soon as possible after all the crossings in New Zealand had been considered. Mr. Mackley stated in his letter that the Railways Board had decided to instal a suitable device as soon as circumstances permitted. This decision will give considerable satisfaction tn both motorists and pedestrians who use the crossing. Several serious accidents have occurred at the crossing and last February Mr. Leonard Stott, of Golf "Road, New Lynn, was killed and two children seriously injured. The total number of level-crossings in New Zealand now fitted with warning devices is 123. A number also have manually-controlled bells. During the year ended last March there were four fatal accidents at level-crossings in Auckland. Several serious accidents have occurred at Mays Road, Te Papapa, Valley Road, Henderson, Argyle Street, Morningside, and Wairere Avenue, Mount Albert,
