EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS
DECREASE IN NET REVENUE X" - ADDITIONAL WAGES PAYMENTS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Monday The General Manager of Railways, Mr. G. H. Mackley, announced to-day the financial returns of the railways for the four-weekly period ended August 17. The gross revenue, £461,892, showed an increase of £21,808, and the expenditure, £442,732, an increase of £28,173, compared with the corresponding period of last year. The net revenue was £19,160, a decrease of £6365 as compared with last year. The expenditure this year included the 5 per cent increase in salaries and wages, amounting for the four weeks to approximately £12,000, so that apart from this item there was an increase in expenditure of £16,173 against the increase of £21,808 in revenue. For the five four-weekly periods of the current financial year so far the revenue increased by £95,430, and the expenditure, which includes approximately £60,000 for the 5 per cent addition to salaries and wages, by £113,483, leaving a decrease of £18,053 in the net revenue.
