TREACLE MYSTERY
PACKED IN BUTTER-BOX RAILWAY STATION COMEDY [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS association] WELLINGTON; Monday The accidental breaking of a butterbox at the Thorndon railway station to-day revealed, not butter but tins marked with Chinese characters and filled with a dark viscous substance. The railway authorities, whose suspicions were aroused, advised the Customs Department, who in turn notified the police. Detectives were quickly on the scene and they set a watch for the claimants of the box. Two men duly arrived, signed for the box and paid the freight charge. The detectives stepped forward and requested an interview at the police station. The .men, when questioned, denied that the sticky substance was opium and declared that it was treacle. The men continued to insist that the tins contained only treacle, eventually an official was induced to taste the contents of one of the tins. It proved to be common household treacle. There is now considerable speculation as to the destination of the treacle and the reason for its strange packing.
