CRUELTY TO BOBBY CALVES

Sir, —I note a statement is made in the Herald that the Hamilton branch of the S.P.C.A. suggests that the collecting of calves should be restricted to two days a week, preferably Mondays and Thursdays. In rush periods as many as 70t)0 calves are received at, the freezing works in one day, so that if the collecting was restricted to two days a week 21,000 or more would be delivered at the works in a day. For 7000 the men work from 2 a.m. until 10.30 p.m., or 20} hours; with three times the number it would be impossible to cope with the numbers. Further, if calves are not held over from one day to the next, how can the men commence work at 2 a.m.? The society claims to have ample evidence of farmers selling calves under age; why not prosecute the offenders? With regard to restricting the number of trucks, I maintain that competition is the life of trade. Fair Competition.
