UNEMPLOYMENT TAXATION

Sir, —Many old people must be grateful for your occasional references to the undoubted hardship imposed on them by the above. Here is a typical case, where a man nearly 80 and his wife about the same age, has an income of a trifle over £lO4 allowed free of tax. Most of this income is from an annuity, which is an uncertain quantity as to its continuance. But the taxation reduces him well below the £'lo4, so that he would be better with the £lO4 than he is with his £lO6. Surely the tax free maximum should also be the cum tax minimum. The case quoted can afford no luxuries, nor even much-needed help, yet many such people will suffer rather than publish their poverty. A Poob Man.
