TIMBER FOR HOUSES
Sir, —Seldom have such mistakes been written as in the letter of Mr. W. J. Elliott on tests of timber. A wood which will last -30 years in the ground may prove no better under other conditions than one which would rot in three months in the ground. I have seen rimu blocks and posts rot in six months in the ground. I have seen kaik planks, six weeks stacked in the mill, rotted through. 1 have seen buildings of Monterey fir (insignis) after 18 years sound. Such "ocular demonstration" may demonstrate nothing. "We want good hard-headed and long and varied experience. We must understand seasoning and many other matters. There are parts of the North Island where puriri will not stand in the ground and where swamp beech will. There are no acid tests for these things. Examples are misleading. The subject requires much space, and becomes too technical for correspondence columns. Old Hand.
