LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

VICE-REGAL VISIT INTEREST IN WORK A largo gathering of members of the Mothers' Union and the League of Mothers was entertained b.v St. Luke's branch of the Mothers' Union yesterday afternoon. Members were present from Mount Albert League of Mothers, St. George's, Kingsland and Avondaie, Blockhouse Bay and Tainaki Maori Mothers' Unions. The Revs. R. G. Coats and W. Panapa officiated at divine service, and Mrs. R. G. Coats presided at the social gathering held afterwards in the parish hall. Her Excellency Lady Galway was the guest of honour at this gathering. On behalf of the pakeha organisations present, Mrs. Coats welcomed Her Excellency, and Mrs. Kautalia Herewini, the enrolling member for Tamaki, 011 behalf of the Maori Union. " We welcome you," Mrs. Herewini said in her native tongue, " the head lady of the land; we welcome you in the voice of the Island, as the representative of the Queen Victoria who signed the Treaty of Waitangi, and who made Maori and Pakeha one; who made us all sisters." " I am very pleased to be with you all," Her Excellency said, " and am especially pleased to meet Maori as well as pakeha members of the Mothers' Union. In England the union is very strong and forms a great bond between the mothers." Her Excellency met personally each one present and received bouquets from the different organisations. Songs were given by Mrs. H. Fiveash, and the Maori members sang a well-known love song and a Maori hymn. Afternoon tea was served. Bayswater-Belmont. —A social evening was held for mothers and fathers bv the Bayswater-Belmont branch in the Presbyterian Hall, Belmont, on Saturdav. The president, Mrs. W. Verran, welcomed the guests. The evening was passed with games, competitions and items, which were contributed by Mrs. J. West and Mr. T. Gerrard. The winners of the competitions were: —Mrs. J. Shutz, Mrs. N. Rowe, Mrs. J. Stevens, Mr. T. McCarthy, Mr. J. Shutz and Mr. Hunt. Grey Lvnn.—Duets by the Misses Power and songs by Mrs. Archer were part of the entertainment provided at a meeting of the branch. An account of the Passion Play was given by Mrs. S. 0. English, provincial president. Mrs. ' Hynes presided and hostesses were Mesdames Adair, Body and Lewis. Mrs. Jurv plaved the accompaniments. Henderson.—Mrs. Osborn presided at a meeting of the branch, when Mrs. Whyte, provincial secretary, gave a talk on " Co-operation in the Home." Mrs. Hutchinson sang, and tea hostesses were' Mrs. Ballinghall and Mrs. Hutchinson.
