THE CITY MARKETS

GOOD DEMAND TOE FRUIT GLUT OF PUMPKINS All classes of fruit sold fairly well at the City Markets yesterday. A shipment of Fiji bananas which arrived on the Waipahi was in fair condition, but the market was weak and low prices were secured for those sold yesterday. Owing to a temporary shortage, tho demand for oranges improved somewhat, while there was also a better demand for New Zealand grapefruit. Tree tomatoes were in short supply. Hothouse grapes will soon be finished and the few lines which came forward yesterday realised high values. Passion fruit are scarce. In the vegetable section, there was another glut of pumpkins, with values still as low as 2s per cwt. There were heavy supplies of cauliflower and kumaras, prices for both lines being a little lower than last week. In spite of heavy supplies coming forward, cabbage prices remained unaltered. Onions of fair size sold at last week's rates, smaller samples being 'slightly cheaper. There was no change in poultry prices. The supply was medium and the demand for table birds was keen.
