OTAHUHU AFFAIRS
PROPOSED STREET WORKS RELIEF SUBSIDY SOUGHT WATER SUPPLY QUESTION A schedule of proposed street formation works, estimated to cost £1437, was submitted to tho Otahuhu Borough Council by the works foreman, Mr. W. J. Hughes. The schedule stated that labour costs would total £GS9 and materials £778. The list of works set out was: —Golf Avenue, storm water drainage, £197; Kaka Street, tar sealing, £49; Clevedon Road, kerbing and channelling, £195; Church Street, kerbing and channelling, £386; Princes Street, tar sealing from Great South Koacl to Albert Street, £6OB. Tho Finance Committee reported that it had considered the schedule and had in the meantime recommended that an application be made for an unemployment subsidy in respect of the Princes Street and Golf Avenue works. The recommendation was adopted. The Finance Committee's suggestion that licences in respect of kerbside petrol pumps be not renewed after the end of the current financial year was ndopted. The pumping engineer reported that in spite of tho recent rains the flow of water at the well had apparently fallen off considerably. In anticipation of another heavy consumption this summer he suggested deepening the present bore by a further 20ft., or the Binkinft of another bore to a depth of 30ft. to 50ft. Judging from results of last year's boring the suggested bore would probably ensure a supply to meet the present requirements of tho town. Tho Mayor, Mr. C. R. Petrie, said ho understood the engineer was merely indicating development work for future guidance and that tho borough supply was ample at present. The report was adopted.
It was decided to advise the Department of Health that the council favoured uniformity in local bodios' bylaws governing the minimum height of dwelling-houso ceilings and to suggest that 9ft. bo considered a bare minimum throughout the Dominion.
