ST. LUKE'S CHURCH
DIAMOND JUBILEE SPECIAL SERVICES HELD The celebration of the diamond jubileo of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, Remuera, was commenced yesterday, when special services were held. There was a large congregation, including many past members of the church, at the morning service, and the singing was led by an augmented choir. The Rev. A. C. McLean, of Cambridge, preached the sermon, his text being, "Other men have laboured and we have entered into their labours." He stressed the heritage from the past and responsibilities for the future. Over 200 past and present members of the St. Ltike's men's and women's classes met at the Bible Class reunion tea in the afternoon, and messages were received from all parts of the Dominion. The speaker was the Rev. G. A. D. Spence In the evening there was a youth service at the church, at which the Bible Classes and members of sports bodies connected with St. Luke's were present. The preacher was Mr. McLean. Thanksgiving offerings were taken at all services for the renovation of the manso and Sunday School and Bible Class buildings. The jublieo celebrations will bo continued throughout the present week. This evening poor children of Sister Esther's mission will bo given a tea, to bo followed by an entertainment, at the Edinburgh Street Hall. There will bo a meeting of tho Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union to-morrow afternoon, and on Wednesday evening a congregational conversazione will bo held in the Sunday School hall. Further celebrations will be a Sunday School children's entertainment on Thursday evening, a pro-communion service on Friday, and a reunion cf past church members on Saturday evening. Hundreds of invitations have been sent out for the latter function, j and it is anticipated that there will be a largo gathering. The celebrations will bo brought to an end with sj>ceia! services next Sunday. The Rev. J. A. Thomson, present minister at the church, assisted by tho Rev. H. B. Burnett, will conduct the morning service, and there will be a children's gathering in the afternoon. The evening service also will have in ' association with the church's jubilee, for it will take the form of a memorial service to tho late Mr. J. W. Ryburn, who was one of the two surviving members of the church present at its opening, and whoso death on the eve of the jubileo was sadly felt by tho congrcga- , tion.
