MILK FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE Writing -with regard to the proposal to provide milk for school children during school hours, free if possible, or if not free, at a very low cost, tho secretary of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council, Mr. N. It. Chapman, stated in a letter received by the City Council last evening that to provide milk for children under tho age of ten years attending the primary schools would entail a cost of £BOOO a year, this figure being based on tho ability to purchase milk at 8d a gallon. It was stated that the Milk Council -would be unable to donate money for this purpose, but was willing to. receive and distribute nnv funds raised. The support and assistance of tho City Council was sought in this matter. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee to consider when framing next year's estimates. The council was asked by the Mayor of Wellington to open a subscription list with the obiect of raising £SO in Auckland toward the total amount of £SOO required for the painting of tho portrait of Lord Bledisloe, to be placed in the National Art Gallery at Wellington. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee, with power to act. It was reported that the sum of £l9-49 14s 6d had been received from Sloane's Estate to cover the betterment claim against the Queen's Ferry Hotel, in connection with the widening of Vulcan Lane. The council decided to receive this sum i* full satisfaction, and discharge of all costs, and demands in respect of betterment.

The Auckland Trades and Labour Council wrote asking the council to pass a resolution requesting the restoration of tho compulsory clauses of tlio Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, for presentation to tho Parliamentary lenders. The request was referred to the Works Committee for a report.

The council decided to grant permission to the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company to construct a bridge across King's Wharf Road for the purpose of convoying butter from its premises to vessels berthed at the wharf opposite. It was decided to charge tho company a yearly rental of £lo.

Tho council decided to support a proposal by the Birkenhead Borough Council that the Prime Minister bo requested' on his forthcoming visit to London to bring before tho British Government tho question of introducing a system of reciprocal old age pensions between Groat Britain and Now Zealand. Advice was received from the director of tho Auckland Institute and Museum that the council's contribution toward tho maintenance of the War Memorial Museum for the year ending March 31, 1936, would be £2524. On tho recommendation of the waterworks engineer and the Public Services Committee, it was decided to revert to tho method of procuring water pipes by calling tenders for estimated annual supplies. It was decided* to accept an invitation to the Mayor and members of tho council to attend tho farewell to Bishop Liston, to be held in tho Town Hall next Thursday on the eve of his departure ou a visit to Rome.
