LICENCES GRANTED MAIL-CARRYING DIFFICULTIES [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON", Thursday Applications for carrying licence or amendments to existing licence were considered at a meeting of the No. 2 Licensing Authority in Hamilton today. The chairman, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, presided. The Hamilton Borough Council was represented by the traffic" inspector, Mr. W. 11. Hoy. A licence for a goods service in the Otorohanga district was sought by Mr. A. Prescott. The applicant stated ho had a mail contract for certain routes in the district, hut to make them pay he required a full goods licence. The previous contractor for the area held a goods licence. The application was supported by the chief postmaster at Hamilton, Mr. W. P. Akiridge, who appeared on behalf of the Post and Telegraph Department. He explained it was not the department's policy to support mail contractors in their applications for transport licences, but he considered Mr. Rrescott's application had special circumstances, which warranted departmental evidence. The contract price for mail-carrying was basScd on the assumption that other goods'would be carried, as the mail contf-act did not bring in sufficient money to allow the contractor to operate without other goods. Mr. Allum pointed out that there was no clause in the Act by which goods service licences could be granted to, mail contractors. The Licensing Authority was not in favour of granting goods service licences to mail contractors where another man with a licence was operating over tho route. The applicant was granted a licence to carry mails and papers over the Otorohanga-Puketarata Hill route, and general goods over tho OtorohangaMaihihi Hall route. Continuous goods service licencos for areas within a 10-mile radius of Hamilton were granted to Messrs. G. H. Barton, of Whatawhata; J. W. Delicate, of Hamilton; E. It. Davey, of Hamilton; G. S.
