THE CENTURY PLANT

UNUSUAL FLOWERING HABIT An American aloe, or century plant, which is supposed to bloom only when 100 years old, but which often does so when only about 10, is at present in flower in the Windsor Reserve, Devonport. Tho plant, which is similar to one of the cactus species, has a flower stalk about 18ft. in height. There are a number of smaller branches which bear beautiful creamy white flowers, while tho leaves are of a deep green, tinted and bordered for the most part by yellow. Each leaf is armed with dangerous sharp hooks, while tho tip forms into a hard spike like a small nail. The plant usually dies a short time after flowering.
