TAMAKI WATER SUPPLY
PROGRESS WITH THE MAIN NEW RESERVOIR IN USE Steady progress is being made with the laying of the new service water pipe along St. Heliers Bay Road to improve the supply in the Tamaki district and particularly the high level residential area above St. Heliers Bay. This 9in. main is being connected to the existing services at Meadowbank Road and has already been laid as far as St. John's College with one small gap. The work should be completed within the next few weeks, but progress will be governed by the rate at which the new pipes are received from the makers.
The position at Tamaki, which was acute just before Christmas, has been slightly improved since the first section of the now reservoir at Mount Hobson was brought into use. Formerly the Remuera and Tamaki districts were served by the old reservoir on Mount Hobson, which has a capacity of approximately 1,250,000 gallons. The new reservoir holding 2,000,000 gallons has now been tested and filled and the water has been turned into the district mains. The second section of the new structure, which will hold a further 2,000,000 gallons, is being built alongsido the old reservoir which has been drained off as a safety measure as the excavations will leave the outer wall without any extra support. When the new reservoir is completed the old one will again be brought into use so that the combined district will have storage reservoirs of a total capacity of 5,400,000 gallons, sufficient to provide ample household supplies at all times and to ensure maximum pressure for fire-fighting purposes.
