OBITUARY

MR. IVOR EVANS The death occurred in Melbourne on January 1 of Mr. Ivor Evans, managing director for Australia of Briscoe and Company, Limited. Mr. Evans, who was 66 years of age, had been in ill-health for nearly two years. Born in Ballarat, the late Mr. Evans had his early commercial training in Melbourne, but in 1899 he was sent to Dunedin as local manager for Briscoe and Company. After 12 months in this position, he was appointed Auckland manager for the company, and he remained here until 1908. During the period he became very well known in the commercial community. He took a prominent part in, the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, being elected vicepresident in 1906. ; Transferred to Melbourne in 1908 to become Melbourne manager of the firm, he was appointed managing director for Australia in 1918, and he retained this position- until his death. Until his illness, the late Mr. Evans was always a keen sportsman, being particularly interested in cricket, tennis and golf. He is survived by his wife and oue son, who live in Melbourne.

MRS. ROBERT A. WILLIAMS The death of Mrs. Robert A. Williams, of 25 Wallace Street, Herne Bay, occurred suddenly at the Auckland Hospital late on Thursday night. Mrs. Williams was born in Galashiels, Scotland, in 1881, and lived there until 1904, when she went to Johannesburg, where she married Mr. Williams who was then engaged on the goldfielda. In 1908 Mr. and Mrs. Williams came to Auckland, where Mr. Williams joined the tramway service, in which he is now an inspector. Mrs. Williams gave a great deal of her time to social work, and for a number of years she was a member of the Girl Guides' and Boy Scouts' committee#, of Ponsonby, and for a year she was president or the Ponsonby branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs. Williams' death occurred very suddenly-. She beeame ill on Wednesday and was ordered to hospital on Thursday afternoon. Besides Mr. Williams, she is survived bv her two daughters, Miss Margaret and Miss Nestor Williams, and by her son, Mr. B. Williams, of tho Post and Tolegrnph Department.

mrs. j. s. Mcdonald The death has occurred of Mrs. J. S. McDonald, of Helensville, in her 84th year. She was one of the oldest residents ot the district. Born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, she arrived at Auckland in 1874 by the ship Quoen of Nations from Belfast, and in the following year she was married to Mr. .Tames Skinner McDonald in St. Matthew's Church. Auckland. For 60 years Mrs. McDonald had resided in the Helensville district. She always took a keen interest in church affairs and was a foundation member of St. Matthew's, Helensville. Her husband predeceased her five years ago. There is a family of one son and five daughters, while there are a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

MR. W. F. HARDING

The death has occurred of Mr. William Frederick Harding, an old resident of the Matamata district, in his 64th year. He was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Harding, of ltotorua. Mr. Harding was born at Opaki, near Mastorton, and spent his early years in the Wairarapa, coaching and farming. In his youth ho was a noted axeman and shearer. In 1906 ho bought a large property near Matamata, where he had farmed ever since. He was a breeder of pedigree draught horses, cattio and sheep, and won many prir.es at local shows. Ho was also a foundation member of tho Matamata Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Mr. Harding is survived by fivo sons and four daughters.
