SURF LIFE-SAVING

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS CHIEF INSTRUCTOR RESIGNS The Auckland provincial surf lifesaving championships will be held on February 16 week-end at a North Shore beach. The decision was arrived at by the executive of the Auckland Surf Life-saving Association. The chairman, Mr. A. Gardiner, intimated that, as only two clubs had applied for championship events, it was better for the association to conduct all the events. A request had been received from the Royal Life-Saving Society to hold a carnival on the occasion of the visit of a prominent London official of that body.

Tlie Speedo Shield for six men rescue and resuscitation teams, senior surf belt race for the Laidlaw Cup, four-man team and March past will comprise the main events. Following the recommendation of the secretary, Mr. H. C. Sidford, it was decided to include special ladies' team championship events to be held at the Auckland championships. The actual events have not been decided, but will be selected from land drill competition, rescue and resuscitation, six girls' team and four girls' team events. As there aro six girls' teams in the province a good entry iB expected. It was recommended to all clubs that they have at least one girls' team event included in all programmes and also that they consider handicaps for surf races. High praise was given the meritorious work of two members of the Tauranga Girls' team, Misses Jean Cameron and Shirley Young, who successfully applied artificial resuscitation to a man who had fallen into the Tauranga Harbour. The chairman remarked that this was an example of the good work done by clubs, and said it was an effective answer to those who doubted the value of girls' clubs. The resignation of the instructor-in-chief, Mr. H. P. Con&don, on the grounds that he was unable to devote the time necessary to the work, was received with regret. The executive recommended to the Board of Judges and Examiners that Mr. A. C. Faulkner be appointed. In the interests of the movement as a whole it was decided to support Otago in its application for the 1936 championships to be held in Dunedin. The application of the Brown's Bay Club to change its name to Eastern United was recommended for approval. This club desires to extend its work over all the bays adjoining Brown's Bay, and it was felt that the change of name w.ould allow of greater 6cope and pubjic support. The Williamson Shield, for competition among metropolitan club rescue and resuscitation teams, was allocated to Takapuna for competition at its New Year's Day carnival. The Hawes Cup will be competed for by metropolitan march past teams at the Milford girls' carnival during the second weekend in January.
