"THE GOVERNMENT"

Sir, —The letter in your colunnls of December 10 by the New Zealand Welfare League under the above beading places responsibility for the unhappy conditions prevailing in New Zealand on the people and not the Government —implying that the latter are merely putting into effect the will or, wishes of the former. An employer* of labour has the power to dismiss his employees if they fail to give satisfaction in their work. The employers of the present Government, unfortunately for themselves, have not this power and to add insult to injury these servants of the people gave themselves the job for another year. Little wonder the people, as intelligent employers, are voicing strong protests at their employees' utter disregard for ordinary, decent behaviour. P. MacG. Stewart.
