LATE MR. JOHN COURT

SERVICES TO THE CITY TABLET IN THE TOWN HALL A marble tablet commemorating the civic services of the late Mr. John Court was unveiled in the vestibule of the Town Hall last night by the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, in the presence of city councillors and officials and members of Mr. Court's family. Mr. Court, said the Mayor, had been a member of the City Council for a number of years, and had served as deputy-mayor during the Mayoralty of Sir James Parr. He was not only a well-kn9wn and worthy citizen, but displayed particular interest in the children of the city. His gifts of play apparatus for the parks and of the elephant Jamuna to the zoo had given pleasure to thousands of young folk. By his active interest in the Community Sunshine Association he had accomplished a great work for poor and under-nourished children through the association's health camps. The deputy-mayor, Mr. A. J. Entrican, who had been a contemporary of Mr. Court in the City Council, said he was glad to be able to join in the tribute. Mr. Court had been most faithful in the performance of his duties as councillor and deputy-mayor and his judgment had always been sound. He had been held in great respect and esteem, and his memory deserved the highest honour. The Mayor then unveiled the tablet, "In memory of a very worthy and beloved citizen." It bears the following inscription:—" This tablet i$ placed here by the Auckland City Council to commemorate the civic services of John Court, born 1846, died 1933, as a councillor of thd city from 19C0 to 1909 and deputy-mayor from 1911 to 1915, and his generous gifts to the city for the benefit of the children." Among the relatives present were two of Mr. Court's sons, Messrs. J. W. and H. J. Court, and a daughter, Mrs. S. 0. English.
