HAIRCUTTING CHARGE

NEW SCALE OF PRICES

RATES FOR SHAVING FIXED

DECISION OF ASSOCIATION The serious position facing the trade as a roswlt of consistent price-cutting has led to members of the Auckland District Hairdressers and Tobacconists' Association agree in a to a plan, which, it is thought, will be effective in stabilising charges. The new scale, which is as follows, will operate as from Monday next:—Minimum ratesCity area, haircutting, Is 3d; shaving. 9d. Outer area, haircutting, Is. shaving 6d. At a general meeting of the Hairdressers and Tobacconists' Association it was stated that the position of the hairdressing trade in Auckland was acute and rapidly becoming worse. It was realised by members that unless something were done a deterioration in service and equipment was inevitable and there would bo no hope of restoring employees to their former position. The plan which was finally adopted was stated to be in accord with a movement throughout the Dominion and similar to schemes that had already been initiated in the majority of southern centres. It was announced that it was the intention of the association to take steps to restore 5 per cent of the wages reduction to employees, who had been working for inadequate amounts. The scheme, however, will not affect women hairdressers in Auckland. At present prices vary considerably and in a large number of cases, it is considered, work is done at ruinous rates. The range in prices is stated to be as follows: —Trim, Is to Is 3d; Marcel wave, 2s 6d to 3s; water waving, 2s Gd to 3s 6d; shampoo and set 4s 6d to ss; face massage, 2s 6d to 7s 6d. A member of the executive of the New Zealand Society of Master Lady Hairdressers, to which 60 pdr cent of the salons ip. Auckland are said yesterday that he thought the only solution of the difficulty was the registration of hairdressers. • " The imijority," he said, " want the stabilising of prices at a reasonable level, but there are many who prefer to sit back and let others do all the work." The society, he continued, had already made au effort to arrive at some settlement of the problem of price-cut-ting, and would renew its activities after the holiday period.
