ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

AUCKLAND TO HELENSVILLE SHORTENING OF ROUTE The distance between Auckland and Helensville by road will be decreased by about half a mile by the metalling of Anderson's Deviation, about one mile south of Kumeu. Advice that a survey would be made at an early date was given in the report presented to the Waitemata County Council at its meeting yesterday by the engineer, Sir. L. F. Faram. On completion of the survey the work could be proceeded with immediately. There was a small length of formation necessary before the metalling could be done. Following representations to the Main Highways Board, advice was received that all formation on the AucklandHelensville main highway would be on a free basis and a subsidy of £3 for £1 would be paid on metalling and sealing. Prior to this decision free formation work was available only as far as H/uapai. Plans wero approved, , subject to slight amendments, for the laying of a base course and sealing the highway through the Mairetahi Riding. Tenders will be called at the next meeting. Proposals for the widening of the shoulders on the Auckland-Maunga-turoto main highway are shortly to be submitted to the council. It is fntended to lay a course of metal alongside the existing bitumen. This will be sealed eventually, making the road a minimum width of 18ft. on straight sections.
