CITY POLICE RAID

THREE PREMISES VISITED ARRESTS OF 21 MEN GAMING ACT CHARGES CHINESE AND EUROPEANS Simultaneous raids on three premises in the city, two in Crey's Avenue and the third in Pitt Street, were made by police parties early last night. In all, 21 Chinese and Europeans were arrested and 15 of them appeared later before Air. J. Donald, J.P., charged with various breaches of the Gaming Act. They were released on bail and, with the remaining six men, will appear in the Police Court this morning. The raids were directed by DetectiveSergeant A, G. McHugh. Nine members of tho force were engaged, three being sent to each address. No resistance was offered, and the arrests were made without difficulty.

Detectives Brady, Hayes and H. Wilson arrested one Chinese and four Europeans at 92 Grey's Avenue, Detectives Sneddon and Davis and Constable Bell arrested a Chinese and seven others at 65 Grey's Avenue, while the third party, Detectives Hamilton and Gillum and Constable Elliott, who visited 40 Pitt Street, took into custody two Chinese and six other men.

The raids wero all made shortly after eight o'clock and a little later the police van made the rounds. Three trips were required to bring all the men hack to the city police station. A quantity of material alleged to be" used in the playing of pakapoo was also taken back to headquarters. Later a Court was held at the police

station. Lim Ming, Ah Louie and Wong Yin were charged with using premises at 65 and 92 Grey's Avenue, and 40 Pitt Street respectively, as common gaming-houses, while the fourth Chinese, Chong Jack Kow, was charged with assisting in the management of a common gaming-house at 40 Pitt Street. They were all remanded to appear in the Police Court this morning, bail being fixed at £SO in each case. Each of the remaining 11 men who appeared before Mr. Donald was chargod with being found without lawful excuse in a common gaming-house, and was remanded until to-day, bail of £2 being allowed. The remaining six spent the night in custody. j
