ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

STREET APPEAL BESULT SUM OF £565 COLLECTED SLIGHTLY DISAPPOINTING About £565 was raised by the annual street appeal ot the St. John Ambulance Association in the city and suburbs yesterday. Last year's total was £760." The result was slightly disappointing, said Mr. S. K. Langstone, manager of the association, especially as the greatly increased services ottered by the association had niado the expenses much greater. The association required £2OOO to carry on its work, and relied on getting £IOOO of this through the street appeal. The collectors had done \erv fine work indeed, but had met with apathy from a certain section of the public. A feature was the increase in the number of smaller coins, £l9 worth of pennies being collected, while there was a further 30s worth of half-pennies, said Mr. Langstono. A few years ago it was unusual to get more than £5 worth of pennies.
