Sept. 26 Costumiers' dress sho vs are attracting large crowds by the variety of the new styles, from which it is possible to choose clothes of almost any period within a century—from directoire to the mode of the " Barretts of Wimpole Street." Many evening gowns show pannier effects. Some skirts are slit at. the back and others exhibit th«i "Josephine" influence, with chiffon scarves of contrasting colour. Some gowns are trimmed with immense flower decorations, hydrangeas apd lilies being used at the waist-line,. More exotic styles include merely draping the figure, letting the brilliantlycoloured Material fall .in decorative folds. The lamp-shade crinoline, in black lace, is alsd introduced, while another crinoline's uplifted hem shows the wearer's ankles. The new evening-gown colours include sea haze blue; which is especially good in taffeta, while the shot effect is being revived. Metal materials are largely used, accompanying which broni'.e shoes are fashionable. Other novelties include dashing Cossack and Persian tunics for day ensembles. One afternoon model has a Persian tunic in gleaming embroidered material worn over a black satin skirt. The colours of the new tweeds range throughout the wood shades from sandalwood to unpolishiiid mahogany. Amusing hats are being shown, some being of paperboat shape, in fait. Many are wearing the little pillbox toques with quill decorations; favoured by Princess Marina.
