EMPIRE AIR MAILS

ENGLAND TO AUSTRALIA

LETTERS FOR NEW ZEALAND POSSIBLE SPECIAL FLIGHT The first trip in the England-Aus-tralia air-mail service will he made in December. No arrangements have been Announced to enable letters for NewZealand to reach the Dominion before Christmas, but it is understood there is a possibility of this being done. It is hoped that in the next fewweeks plans will be made by which the Dominion section of the mail will be brought from Australia by air and distributed to the main centres by similar means, resulting in letters which leave London on December 8 being delivered in New Zealand a day or two before Christmas. There are similar expectations concerning mail from New Zealand to' connect with the air-liner scheduled to leave Brisbane for England on December 10. This mail is due in London 14 days later. It is understood that two concerns intend approaching the department in New Zealand with schemes for transtasmaa (lights. The trips would probably be made on a similar basis to the air-mail flights of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Mr. C. T. 1\ Ulm. The possibility of a special New Zealand stamp being issued to mark the occasion has also been mentioned. The issue of a new Is 6d stamp for use on the Australia-England service has been arranged in the Commonwealth. The England-Australia air-mail service will be the longest in the world. It will be weekly, and provides for a 12 days' journey from Brisbane to London, but in order that the Duke of Gloucester may be able to despatch the first machine from Brisbane on December 10, the first outward trip has been extended to 14 days.
