NEW ZEALAND NURSE

The first Royal Red Cross to be presented to a New Zealand nurse during the war was given to the late Miss Annie Tombe by the King at Buckingham Palace. Miss Tombe. whose death took place in Dunedin recently, offered her services when war broke out in 1914 to thd New Zealand War Contingent Association, which later on rented Mount Felix, Walton-on-Thames. Miss Tombe, with the assistance of the New Zealand War Contingent Association, organised and furnished Mount Felix as a hospital. She acted as matron for a year, and then retired on account of her health. Later on she acted as matron at Rest Harrow, at Sandwich, a rest home for New Zealand overseas nurses. This home was also conducted by the New Zealand War Contingent Association, but after some time it had to be given up on account of its dangerous position. Miss Tombe also helped Lady Plunket to run a home in London for the wives of officers. All her war work was voluntary.
