ST. LEGER STAKES

TtME EQUALS RACE RECORD ' RECENT PURCHASE RECALLED LONDON. Sept. 12 The St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster to-day was won by the Derby winner Windsor Lad. Result:—- t y ST. LEGER STAKES, Of £IOO each, with £'4ooo added; three-year-old colts and fillies, colts 9.0, fillies 8.11; about 1 mile 6 fur. 132 yds. WINDSOR LAD, M. Benson's b c, by Blandford—Resplendent (C. Smirke) 1 TIBERIUS, Sir Abe Bailey's br c, by Foxlaw—Glenabatrick (R. Jones) .. 2 LO ZINGARO, J. A. Dewar'e ch c, by Solario—Lovo in Idleness (G. Richards) 3 Ten started, St. Hubert being the only scratching. Two lengths; same. Time. 8m 1 3-ss, which equals the race record established by Coronach in 192 C.

After winning the Derby for the Maharaja of Rajpipla in June Windsor Lad was sold to Mr. Martin Benaoti for £50,000 in the following month. The price constitutes a record for a horse in training, the previous record being £40.000 paid by Mr. J. B. Joel for Prince Palatine the day before the five-year-old was beaten for the Goodwood Cup. It is not, however, a record for a thoroughbred, Sir Harry Mallaby Deeley having given £60,000 for the 1927 Derby winner Call Boy on thfr death of Mr. Frank Curzon.

The Maharaja of Rajpipla bought Windsor Lad as a yearling for 1300 guineas in July. 1932, and the colt won £13.402 prior to being sold to Mr. Benson. When asked whether there was any chance of Windsor Lad going to America to run in the proposed international race there next year Mr. Benson replied in the negative, adding: "He will not leave my stud at Beech House, Newmarket, once I have sent him there." Until 1931 Mr. Benson was the managinedirector of Messrs. Douglas Stuart. His great hobby is bloodstock breeding and his ambition is to win the Derby with a horse bred at his Newmarket sturl. The St. Leger Tesult adds further lustre to the great record of Blandford as a sjre. He has been responsible for the Derby winners Trigo. Blenheim and Windsor Lad: the St. Leger winners Trigo and Windsor Lad; the Orte Thousand Guineas winner Campanula; the Oaks winner Udaipur; H'arinero. who won the Irish Derby and the Irish St. Leger; the French Two Thousand Guineas winner Brantome. who was unbeaten last year as a two-year-old; the Grand Prix winner Admiral Drake, and the Gimcrack Stakes winner Bahrain. Last year the value of the St. Leger to the winner was £9573.

TWO-YEAR-OLD PARADE LADY RULER SUCCESSFUL [Br TBLEGBAPH —FROM ARCHER] WANGANUI, Thursday Only .eight of the sixteen carded were produced in the parade of two-year-olds that was held before racing commenced at Wanganui to-day, and with the exception of Lady Ruler and Prevail, who were runners at Marton last week, they were without public experience. The youngsters were sprinted from a barrier start with the colours, up over , a distance, of about two furlongs, and the result was as follows:

Fairfax was disinclined to face the barrier, but an even start was effected, Prevail and Lady 'Ruler, near the inside, and Fairfax, on the outside, being the first to break the lin6. The three fillies were almost abreast after going about a furlong, Lady Ruler and Fairfax then drawing away for Lady Ruler to beat the latter' home by a head. They werq a shapely lot of youngsters and some of them ate likely to make considerable improvement. Lady Ruler appears to have benefited by her race at Marton.
