CITY BACKS PROMINENT The curtain-raiser between City and Newton provided early spectators with a bright exhibition of the code. Good passing by the City backs was a feature of the first half. City established an early lead nnd held on until tho end, although Newton pressed hard. City forwards were successful in hooking the ball. Newton had the better of the second half, and was unlucky not to score. Stephens, on the wing, made several great solo efTortß. The City forwards were a little superior to Newton, although there wns not a great deal to choose between the packs. Until he rotired hurt, Watene played a sound game at fullback. McLaughlin was easily the best back. His speed and straight running got City out of a lot of trouble. Both Johnson and Wiberg played fine games. Axeman, at halfback, gave a much improved display. Turei played better than usual, although on occasions he could have used his pace to better advantage. Saunders and Clarke played good games among the forwards. Herring and Nathan were also proini- ! nent For Newton, Stephens was the outstand- ! ing player. Hall was tho best forward on i the ground, doing great work in the concluding stages.
