TEMPERANCE WORK
An address 011 the Bible was given by Mrs. Stimpson to members of the Auckland Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mrs. John Cook presided. Mrs. Christie, of the Waihi Union, Rave a short account of work in that district. Mrs. Cook urged members to do their utmost to support efforts to get the Bible into the schools and announced that a mass meeting was to be held in the Town Hall shortly Delegates were appointed to the district convention to be held in Auckland m September. A letter was sent to Mr. W. E. Parry, MP., asking him to support legislation giving effect to several proposals, these being: ''That the Courts shall be closed to the general public during the hearing of cases ot affiliation and maintenance. lhat the Government shall provide for the employment of women police. Ihat the Minister for Unemployment shall take steps to exompt women workers from payment of the unemployment tax in view' of the fact that unemployed women receive practically no benefit from the fund." "That the Minister shall take into consideration the question of raising the amount of income to be exempted from the unemployment emergency tax from £2O to i,o-. "That a higher standard of pay be given to relief workers. lhat the Hon. C. J. Carrington's bill re contraceptives receive full support. Mrs. Norman McKenwo gave a talk on her work among the women m South China, where she and her husband -had worked as missionaries for many years in connection with the Church Missionary Society.
