THERMAL ACTIVITY
WHAKAREWAREWA . GEYSERS SHOTS FORTY FEET HIGH [by telegraph OWN correspondent] ROTOKUA, Thursday There has been exceptional thermal activity at Whakarewarewa to-day. The water in the Cauldron crater rose between five and six feet above its normal level and threw off large volumes of steam. Loud subterranean rumblings from the Pohutu geyser have been very pronounced all day. These thermal conditions are usually an indication that Pohutti is about to become active.
Since the last activity of Pohutu the Waikorohihi geyser, which is in very close proximity, has remained quiescent. The Waikite geyser has been very active, and several times during the day sent up shots to a height of 40ft.
Papakuca and other geysers in the reserve have been more active than usual.
