NEW RADIO TRANSMITTER

DUNEDIN SITE PURCHASED SERVING SOUTHERN AREAS [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Wednesday A site for a new transmitter for the Dunedin radio station, 4YA, has been purchased, according to an announcement made to-day by the manager of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, Mr. E. C. Hands. It is a property of 20 acres at Highcliffe, on the Otago Peninsula, about six miles from Dunedin. It is 1200 ft. above sea level, about 100 yds. from the main road. The power for the new transmitter has not yet been decided upon, but it is expected it will be designed mainly to provide good coverage for Otago and districts south of the province. The remainder of the South Island, except parts 4 of the West Coast, already has a good service from 3YA, Christchurch. The erection of the new - transmitter will be proceeded with in a few months, by which time the entire new IYA station at Auckland will be approaching completion. The next step in the board's development plan following the new 4YA transmitter has not yet been decided, but it is possible a new studio ■will be provided at 3YA, Christchurch, which has a new transmitter. A site for the studio has already been purchased. The Dunedin studio was the only one of the original studios built specially for broadcasting. _ ,
