TARIFF RESOLUTIONS

EARLY NEXT WEEK MR. FORBES' EXPECTATIONS CHANCES FOR DISCUSSION [by telegraph —special reporter] WELLINGTON, Wednesday One effect of the Labour Party's abstention from the Address-in-Reply debate is likely to be the introduction of the tariff resolutions next week. This question has been engaging the attention of the Minister of Customs, Mr. Coates, for several wc-eks. Ihe report of the Tariff Commission has been under Cabinet consideration for some time, and Mr. Coates' plan was to bring the tariff question before the House at the conclusion of the current debate, which had been expected to last about a fortnight. That would have meant the introduction of the tariff resolutions about the middle of the month. , , ~ Following the Labour Party s sudden announcement in the House to-day that it would take no part m the present debate, the Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes, visited Mr. Coates, who has been confined to his residence with influenza since Sunday. On his return, Mr. Forbes said in an interview that it was now probable that the tariff resolutions would be brought down early next week, as the Address-in-Reply debate was expected to end this week. , These resolutions must necessarily be put through at one sitting and will be confirmed some weeks later by the Customs Amendment Bill. However, it is proposed to table the report of the Tariff Commission next week, and it is probable that members will be given an early opportunity to discuss the principles behind the contemplated revision of the tariff. By that procedure the Government hopes to confine discussion on the Customs Amendment Bill to the particular items involved in the alteration of the duties. The arrangement regarding the introduction of the tariff resolutions must be regarded as tentative in the meantime, as the position is governed by the length of the Address-in-Reply debate and the health of Mr. Coates, who is not expected to be fit for duty for a few more days.
