NOTES ON THE RUNNING

REBEL STAR IMPRESSES / DEFEAT OF THE SMUGGLER [BY TELEGRArH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TIMARU, Saturday Rasouli was sent out a staunch favourite for the Tekapo Hurdles at Timaru to-day. but was never dangerous. Gallivanter and Arcade were responsible for a fast pace. Arcade retired before reaching the home turn, and Fleeting Glance* Adult and Gold Knight moved up to Gallivanter. Fleeting Glance soon assumed command in the run home and won easily. ' Red Dance, rehandicapped 61b for his W aim ate win, was in most demand for the Smithfield Hack Handicap, and justified his position, Ho was first into the straight and, although challenged by Brown Pearl and Dracula, he held them oS to win easily from Brown Pearl, who narrowly beat Dracula. , ... Sky "Wink created a mild surprise by win-, ning the Otipua Trot. He was in front from the bnTrior rise and staving all challenges, won decisively from Guy Mauritius, who r;ot up to beat Irish Peach. The Smuggler carried over 100 tickets moro than Some Shamble in the Tescnemnker Handicap, but the latter hud the race in hand two furlongs from home, while The Smuggler was beaten out of a place. Chrysology hopped away in the lead and at the seven furlong post was five lengths in front of Some Shamble. Shatter was Inst place, with Red Racer. Some Shamble gradually reduced the leeway going through the back stretch, and Chrysology had only a length advantage from him entering the straight, with The Smuggler, Kcmal Pasha; nnd Shatter closing up. Soma Sljjimblo had Chrysology settled as soon as the run home was entered upon, and' although Chrysology hold on, Soma Shamble beat h}m by a nqok. In a close tussle third money Shatter got up to beat ICemal Pasha, with Palmary and The Smuggler in close attendance. Imperial Spear won his first race by accounting for a big field in the Electric Stakes. Disguise was in charge at tho distance, but Imperial Spear then drew out, and went oil to wm in an easy manner from Wild Sky. Wonderful finished last on tho outsido and cut Disguise out of third money on tha post. Rebel Star was a pronoupced favourite for the Rosewill Hack Handicap and by loading throughout and winning in a decisive manner ho stamped himsolf as one of the best hacks in commission in tho South Island. Irish Peach made nmfi'Hs for her previous defeat by winning the Gladstone Trot after a close finish. Hurlingham was made an odds-on favourif.o for the concluding event. Dollar Prince was first into tho straight from Royal Amphora, Silver Streak and Hurlingham. Royal Amphora did not Inst long, and Hurlingham soon hnd Dollar Prince's measure. Water Power, who was last away, then appeared on the scene with n, determined challenge, but Hurlingham responded well, and won by a length. Dollar Prince tired badly into third place, two lengths away, and there was then a gap of four lengths to Royal Amphora. Silver Streak and Rin Tin Tin were next.
