NOTES ON THE FORM MISHAPS IN STEEPLES THE END OF ACERVATE [by telegraph—own correspondent] MART.ON. Saturday Boudoir, favourite for the Novice Stakes at Marton to-day, got badly stopped in the running at tho half-mile, and afterwards the best she could .do was to head off Wharaurangi for second place. Lnpel. who was one of tlioso who began, well, led into the straight and won nicely by jußt over n. length from Boudoir, who beat Wliarauraijgi by a head. Ethiop was fourth, with Round Score, Grand Joy and Flaxen handy. Lapel showed plenty of pace. Boudoir was unlucky, but ehe does not improve much. Wharaurangi, who was well backed, had every chance. Ethiop showed pace and should improve.

Invictus ecorcd a comfortable and impressivo win in tho hurdlo race. Ho led all the way and pet a* fast pace, Esteem moved up down the back and waa goins well enough to threaten danger, but ho jumped the last fence elowly and Tnviolus had no difficulty in holding him.. Manawatu waa ft moderate third, with Million, High Falutin und Don Errna tpgether further hack and Easterly next, lnvictua gave iiotlung a chance. Esteem, who was last a,way at tho ptart, piade up. hia ground very fast :n tho middlo stages. Ida Merllng's win in the Crofton Handicap was n. mild surprise, but success was tho reward of tactics. Ida Merlins and Stitch put a big break on tho field in tho first half, and then at tho six furlongs Ida Merlins went out clear into tho lead. Once in the straight Senegal made a big bid TO ovorhaul Ida Morling, but she hung on just too well, Stitch was a fair third, with La Poupeo fourth, followed by Chopin and Gibraltar, It was a weak field, and, one) tho winner got her early advantage, si'o never looked like being beaten. A slb. up* prentice allowance further assisted her. Of tho six slarters ii> tho Marlon Steeplechase, only Tunbridgo and Bon Ayran survived the journey without a tall, while both had lives. Judged on actual form for the future it was a poor affair. Tho favourite Acervato apparently had tho race in hand when alio ran past tho leaders at the five furlongs, but less than a couple of furlopgs later, with throe fences yet to jump, si.j broke down hopelessly ancl was nlmoßt down coming to tho third to last obstacle. Sho gallantly jumped it, but landed with a broken foreleg and fell. TJiis left Tunbridgo and Bon Aryan the only runners standing up, Transact having fallen early jn tho first round and Royston falling and bringing down Currajong as Acervato jumpod pnst them. Bon. Aryan hit the third to last fence hard nnd gavo Tunbyiclgo tho load, but Tunbridgo had to be hard ridden to beat him home. Some minutes later Cur/ajong wan remounted and completed the course for third money. A number of the runners in tho Riddiford Plato lost their chances at the start, and thoy innludod Rrd Rufus and the second favourito All Spirit. On the other hand, Pango got oft well. Pango led into tho straight from Bed Rufus, and gained a lead of two or three lengths. Then Oriel put in a great run and, finishing solidly under tho whip, had Pango beaten 30yds. from tho post. Bed Rufus was a fair third, with iTCbeum fourth, followed closely , by Lady Ronald, All Spirit, Hark Forrard and Moatoa. Oriel'p win was decisive. Epigram, at a good prico, scored very decisively in tho open sprint from some strong opposition. Buydore was left, and Pheop f*ot away badly. Oullus shot away entering tho straight and looked a winner, but afto): Good Hunting and Lady Nan had beaten him Epigram came with n strong finishing run to win going away from Gopd Hunting, with Cadjand just failing *° reach the latter for second. Golden Chant got a, run °n the rajls into fourth place. Epigram's performance whs impressive. Good Hunting had every chance. Cadland was ona of the last into tho straight, and finished with something like his old dash. Goldep Chant was not favoured by good luck, tynd ran very creditably.
