NOTES ON RUNNING

WINRAMA DEFEATS EXPRESS

ROMAN MASCOT WINS SPRINT

SUCCESS OF BONNY GAY

BY ARCHER

Having her second start, the three-year-old filly "Winrama oponed her winning account by decisively defeating tho each-way favourite Express in the Junior Stakes. Express received a chock early and wont right back to tho rear, Silent Miss leading along tho back from Miss Estelle, Nurjahan and WinraXna. Express moved up on tho outsido at tho top and was second to Miss Estelle at tho turn, where Nurjahan and Winrama were handy. Miss Estello and Express were disputing tho honours at tho distance when Winrama dashed up on the outsido to beat .Express by threo lengths. Miss Estelle was a head away third, followed by Barograph and Nurjahan.

Winrama did not show tip on tho first day but she was second favourite on both machines in the weaker field on this occasion. Sho was always fairly handy and simply smothered the opposition over tho last half-furlong. Express had her chanco sorioualy affected by losing her position early, otherwise she y/ould havo made it more difficult for tho winner. Misa Estello made a fair showing, hut the others were well beaten.' The first and second were both sired by Whirlwind. Timorous Boats Solomon

Capably handled by H. Goldfinch, Timorous finished ' well to defeat tho each-way favourite, Solomon, in tho Onerahi Hack Handicap. Rosy, and Hoihoma were badly left at tho start, and La Poto was quickly in tho lead from Solomon, Timorous and Chief Clerk, with Sir Val running up on tho outsido, Solomon assumod command noaring; tho turn and was first into the straight from Chief Clerk, La, Polo, Timorouq and Sir Val. Timorous finished solidly or) tho outside and won by a neck from Solomon, who defeated Chief Clerk by a length iind a-half. Sir Val was fourth, fpllowed bj' Mountain Breezo, La Poto and Rosy. Timorous did not havo the best of luck in her races on tho first day, but on this occasion she drew a better position at the barrier and had a good run on the rails until reaching tho straight, whero sho came to tho outside to mako her run. Solomon ran another good race but Timorous proved just too good at the weights. Chief Clerk again performed creditably and Sir Val made a fair showing, although ho did not finish as well as on the first day.

Prolyxo was an ieach-way favourite for the Autumn Handicap, _ but had to lower her colours to the consistent Gay Broney, who scored yerj decisively. Gay Broney was quickly in front from Speedmint, and at the stands Gay Broney and Alloy were the leaders from Speedmint and Prolyxo, who were together ahead of D'Artagnan and Ornamental. The field bunched crossing the top and Gay Broney led into tho straight just ahead of Alloy, Prolyxo and D'Artagnan. Gay Broney gave nothing a chanco at the finish and won by two lengths from Prolyxo, who defeated D'Artagnan by two and a-half lengths. Ornamental was fourth, fallowed by Alloy and Speedmint. Close Finish in Hurdles

Gay Broney relished the easy going and won very decisively after being in the lead throughout. Ho is right at the top of his form at present and is racing very consistently. Prolyxo had every chance but was not quite good enough. D'Artngnan made a fair showing. Ornamontal was unlucky to miss a place and was finishing on strongly after being checked just inside the distance. Speedmint again ran only moderately and is below her best. On tho strength of his first day's victory Careen was a better favourite than Golden Wedding for tho Parua Bay Hack Hurdles and he got up on the rails in tho last couple of strides to beat her by a head. Blue Bonnet led over tho first fence and soon established a lead of about ten lengths. Passing tho stands Blue Bonnet was out sit lengths from Diversion, with Ruby Meteor and Golden Wedding together next, and •Cargen last. Diversion headed Blue Bonnet going along the back and she just lead at tha top from Golden Wedding and London, • with Cargen moving up. Diversion and Golden Wedding came into the straight together and they led at tho last fence, where Diversion hit hard and Golden Wedding pecked sljghtiy. Golden Wedding then gained n slight advantage, but Cargen challenged litrongly on the rails and defeated her by a head. Diversion was three purls of a length away third and Ruby Meteor was a moderate fourth, followed by London nnd Bluo Bonnet. It was a fine contest nnd Cargen. nfter being patiently ridden, fiiTjsbed on strongly to take the honours in tho last couple of strides. Cargen's performance was solid but he was lucky to get such a fine opening on the rails. Golden Wedding ran another good race and so did Diversion, who would probably not have left the opening for Cargen if Bhe had not struck the last fence. Favourites Run Unplaced Tho favourites Arch Rider and Alpinua were Unplaced in the Flying Handicap and two outsiders, Roman Mascot and Solomon, finished first and second, Roman Mascot paying double figures to win. Whakapara was first away "from Roman Mascot and at the end of a furlong they were together in the lead, with Solomon running up fast on tho outsido nhend of Hampton Park, Alpinus and Hushing. Solomon assumed the lead nearing tho top, where Whakqpara lost his position and Arch Ruler received a bad check; Solomon showed tho way Ecross the top nnd led into tho straight from Roman Mascot, Alpinus nnd Hampton Park, Solomon looked likely to win at the distance but he hung away from the rails niul Roman Mascot finished resolutely on the inside to beat him by half a head, Sinking Fund ran on to get third, half a length away, and Hampton Park was right up fourth, with Alpipu? and Arch- Ruler almost in line, Roman Mascot maintained her reputation for consistency. As usual slio began well •and had a fine run- on the rails most of the way. Solomon displayed fine speed in getting to the front quickly from tho extreme outside at the barrier and would probably have won if ho hnd not left ail opening on the rails for Roman Mascot. Whakapara was not dangerous after losing his position along the back and Arch Ruler's chance wns affected by tho check lie received along the back. Sinking. Fund did much better than on Thursday, finishing very strongly. Monanui was an each-way favourite. for tho Ruatangata Handicap and duly scored, although ehe had little to spare from Titanette, The first an<;l second horses are both trained by ,T. Hoey, who also owns tho winner. Titanette was first out from No. 1 and wns soon joined by Lorelle, the pajr leading along tho back from Archeen, Blue Grey and Monanui. Lorelle led aoross tho top from Titanette and Monanui, with the others several lengths back. Lorelle and Mcnnnui were first into the straight from Titanette, nnd Monanui went on to score by n neck from Titanette, who beat Lorelle by a length and a-linlf. Bush Lawyer, who carried 17lb. overweight, was a moderate fourth, followed by Pirimint. Tho placed horses had the race to them ; selves over tho last three furlongs. Monanui was hard ridden at tho finish and just prevailed from Titanette, who came again nfter the winner had run past her at tho turn. Horno was not seen to advautnge on Titanette. An Easy Victory Bonny Gay. tho place favourite, nnd Gigantic, the win favourite, finished first and second in the Northern Hack Handicap. Mountain Breezo led early from Bonny Gay and Chief Clerk and she made play along the back, where Coronis ran up handy. Nearing the turn Coronis assumed the lead and she came into the straight just ahead o£ Bunny Gay and Mountain Breeze, with Gigantic making a forward move. Bonny Guy was in charge nt the distance nnd she went on to score by half a length from Gigantic, who finished on to bent Coronis by three parts of a length. Chiof Clerk wns fourth nnd Mountain Breeze last. Bonny Gay's rider wns sitting still at the finish nnd she won handsomely.

Tlio Ivia Ora Handicap provided a most exciting content and tho largest dividend of ll)o ijieeting, Ornamental Bcoring narrowly and paying over a ncore on tho win machine. Karangapni, Roman Mascot anil Taurua wore quickly prominent, Karangapai leading along tho back from Taurua, Roman Mascot, C!ay Cockade, Prolyxo nnd Ornamental. There was not much change iu tho positions until Ornamental went up fast on the outsido crossing the top and at tho (urn she was in second position behind Karangapai. with Prolyxo, Roman Mascot mid Gay Cockade all handy. Once in line for the post, Prolyxo and Ornamental challenged 011 tlie outside and Roman Mascot made an effort on the rails. Alloy, fairly wide out, also made a run and in a great finish Ornamental won by half a head from Roman Mascot, with Karangapai a neck away third. Alloy was right up fourth and Prolyxo almost ip. lino fifth. The. first five horses nil had winning chances in the last furlong and there was little between them as tfrey crossed the line. Ornamental was vory vigorously ridden by R'. Martin and the tactics suited her. Slio was taken into second position, at the turn and stayed on solidly at tho finish. Roman Mascot made another good showing and Karangapai failed on|y in tho last fifty yards nfter being responsible for most of the .running. Prolyxo nnd Alloy also shaped well, Al|oy was a lonfj way back in the middle stages and made a fi)io effort i,n the (straight, although ho weakened slightly near tho post.
