DAVIS CUP CONTEST
FIRST ROUND DRAW NEW ZEALAND'S OPPONENT (Received February 4, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Feb. 3 The draw for the first round of the Davis Cup contest is as follows: —European zone: Czecho-Slovakia plays New Zealand; Italy a bye; Switzerland versus India; France versus Austria; Germany versus Australia; Japan a bye. North American zojje: United States versus Canada; Mexico a bye. South American zone: Brazil versus Peru.
ADELAIDE TENNIS SATURDAY'S MATCHES HOPMAN BEATS WILDE (Received February 4. 5.5 p.m.) ADELAIDE. Feb. 4 In the tennis tournament in Adelaide yesterday results were:— Singles. —Hopman beat Wilde, 6—3, 6—3; Turnbull beat Hughes. B—6, 4 —6, 6—3; Perry beat Crawford, 6—l, 6—2. Doubles. —Turnbull and Quist beat Lee and Wilde, B—6, 6—i, 4—6, 7 —9, 6—2. Australia has won five rubbers 13 sets and Britain three rubbers 10 sets. There were 6000 spectators, hundreds being unable to obtain admission. There was much discussion over Hopman's non-inclusion in the Australian Davis Cup team. Crawford said Hopman unfortunately had been overlooked. It was evident that ho was anxious to demonstrate in Adelaide that he is at least the equal of Turnbull and Quist.
