TRADE DISPUTE
BRITAIN AND FRANCE NON-RESTORED QUOTAS RETALIATORY TARIFF EARLY ENFORCEMENT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received February 4, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Feb. 3 The Daily Telegraph states that in view of the refusal of the French Government to restore the full quota on British imports in all cases the British Government's decision to impose retaliatory duties will be enforced in the coming week. Details of the French reply have not been disclosed, but it is known to have been regarded as entirely disappointing and unsatisfactory. Consultations between the Foreign Office and the Board of Trade yesterday resulted in the decision that retaliation is the only courso open to Britain.
The time limit will expiro on Monday, but may bo extended a few days to permit of a careful drafting of the schedule of new duties. Ministers feel that as France intends to use quotas to counter trade negotiations only retaliatory duties will enable Britain to negotiate on equal terms.
