OPOTIKI COUNTY ROADS
MAIN HIGHWAYS QUESTION DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL [FROM OUR OTVS CORRESPONDENT] OPOTIKI, Saturday A suggestion that the roads in the various ridings should bo declared main highways on a more equitablo basis was mudo by Mr. Joblin at a meeting of the Opotiki County Council. The chairman, Mr. J. H. Reid, said that perhaps they should do away with ridings except for representation purposes. Mr. A. Martin said he considered it was time to start striking the rate on tho improved valuo instead of on the unimproved value. The chairman said such a proposal would never bo carried, as ratepayers would be pjiying more. The Clerk: Then perhaps it could be done by classification of the land. "What wo want to do," said Mr. Reid, "is to pick out a, few of those roads in the Otara Riding and declr.ro them county roads. That would bo more equitable." The question was deferred until a future meeting.
