WOMEN SMUGGLERS
JEWELLERY AND SILKS ! ! Women sire the principal smuggling offenders, according to a customs official in discussing the report of the Commissioners of Customs and Excise. This .report showed that during the year ended March 31 there were 3177 persons convicted of smuggling, compared -with 2803 in the preceding year. "Women give the authorities most trouble," said the official. "In spite of the warnings and heavy penalties imposed, they continue to take a peculiar delight in trying to get silk and jewellery ' through. "Cameras and binoculars are two of the most popular articles, smuggled by men, and, of course, tobacco and cigars." Hover is one of the places where smuggling is on the increase. Fines of more than £2OOO have been imposed there this year. Cameras, jewellery, fancy articles, and perfumery have figured prominently in the cases.
