PICTURES ON SUNDAY

TAKAPUNA BAND'S REQUEST

CONDITIONAL APPROVAL The question of granting permission to the Takapuna Citizens' Band to show a moving picture on a Sunday within the next three weeks was before the Takapuna Borough Council last evening. >The application was opposed by Mr. G. M. Galbraith,' who considered that permission should notrbe granted for any function that was not of a sacred nature.

"There is no doubt opinions are changing to-day," said the Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven. "A new generation is growing up which regards as purely selfish anyone who tries t to prevent others from doing things because he does not approve of them himself." He considered a conference should be held with the church authorities, to see if some arrangement could be. reached whereby Sunday entertainments could be held without interfering with church services. '

Sir. T. M. Rollo moved that permission be granted on this occasion and that a committee be set up to confer with church authorities in connection with future applications. An amendment moved by Mr. M. L* Wilkins that permission be granted provided the picture was of a sacred nature, and that the programme was approred by the Mayor, was carried by six votes to four..

A deputation was also heard from the band, requesting financial assistance to cover a debt of ££>4 owing by a previous band in the borough for instruments. The matter was referred to the council in committee.
